Haddon. xxiii, 407p., 16 b/w illus., front. tissue-guard still present, 867 text figures, original blue cloth with gilt lettering, t.e.g., deckle edges a very minor stain on the upper right corner of the front panel, o/w very clean copy throughout with tight hinges. Author's SIGNED presentation on a front blank endpaper: "With the Compliments of the Author Caroline Furness Jayne". Private bookplate inside the front cover of Dr. Wesley Wilbur Beckett (1857-1936), a Southern California surgeon, president of the California Medical Association, and later major donor to the University of Southern California medical school. Jayne was an important early American ethnologist (1873-1909) who travelled extensively and focused upon the universality of play and amusement among human groups. Haddon was her mentor. This signed first edition is a classic in the field of anthropological research.
