Original vegetable half-vellum spine with the original stiff brown boards, all three stiff paper flaps still present. Full name of the artist along the spine of the portfolio, plus a gilt facsimile signature of the artist on the front board. All 40 engraved plates with the embossed publisher's stamp on the lower margins (the printed contents page itemizes only 39 plates, but the 40th "Bauernmädchen" is also included to complete the set. A major set of prints of this Swiss painter (1853-1918), whose romantic and patriotic themes also included forays into symbolism and sexuality.
