Author's SIGNED presentation on a front blank endpaper: "With the Compliments of the Author Caroline Furness Jayne". Private bookplate inside the front cover of Dr. Wesley Wilbur Beckett (1857-1936), a Southern California surgeon, president of the California Medical Association, and later major donor to the University of Southern California medical school. Jayne was an important early American ethnologist (1873-1909) who travelled extensively and focused upon the universality of play and amusement among human groups. Haddon was her mentor. This signed first edition is a classic in the field of anthropological research.
